Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Institute |
June 21-25 ~ Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Institute ~ at The Maritime Academy of Toledo
Cost: $240 registration includes 2 credits and 5 lunches (M-F) or $540 with 4 nights lodging (M-Th) & meals.
Description: Participants will spend 4 nights at The Toledo Maritime Academy, experiencing navigation simulators, boat-building lab, radar simulator, touring the historic S.S. Boyer and Toledo port facilities, investigating invasive species, monitoring water quality, and excursions on the Maumee River.

Forestry Ecology & Resources Teacher Institute |
June 28 - July 2 ~ Forestry Teacher Institute ~
Cost: $400 registration includes five lunches (M-F) and three graduate credits from Michigan Tech or $650 (with 4 nights lodging & meals from dinner Monday to breakfast Friday).
Description: Michigan Technological University (MTU) brings together the expertise of university faculty, scientists, natural resource management professionals, and educators to conduct this Institute. Through lecture, hands-on data collection, classroom activities, and field trips, participants will obtain new knowledge and skills that can be applied to their work with students. Topics presented will be tree ID, forest measure-ments, ecology, silvicultural prescriptions, forest health & insect pests, wildlife, water quality monitoring, carbon sequestration, and innovative school-community partnership programs.

Mathematics & Navigation |
June 28 - July 2 ~ Mathematics & Navigation (Limited to 12 participants)
Cost: $250 registration (2 credits; lunch on your own) or $475 with 4 nights lodging, breakfasts & dinners)
Description: explore how to use marine navigation to teach topics in geometry and algebra. Learn navigation techniques aboard MTU research vessel Agassiz. Engage students in solving navigation problems using mathematics, charts, and both simple and electronic navigation instruments.

Future Fuels from Forests |
July 12-16 ~ Future Fuels from Forests ~
Cost: $250 includes five lunches (M-F) and three graduate credits from Michigan Tech or $490 with 4 nights lodging on-campus (Sunday-Thursday) and all meals. Upon completion of teaching unit, teachers may select $200 classroom supplies. Participants outside Houghton County are eligible to receive up to $300 travel reimbursement (mileage or airfare).
Description: This five-day Institute will engage middle/high school educators in an interdisciplinary investigation of forest-based ethanol production that will integrate silviculture and forest ecology, GIS, and mechanical and chemical engineering through lecture, field trips, and computer simulations. Teachers will receive training in and receive the new Michigan Energy Resources unit (easily adapted to other states) and Project Learning Tree’s Forests of the World.

Global Change |
July 19-23 – ED5641 Global Change ~
Cost: $425 includes lunches (M-F) and three graduate credits from Michigan Tech or $675 includes 4 nights (Monday-Thursday) lodging and all meals at Michigan Tech.
Description: This five-day Institute will prepare you to engage your middle and high school students in a real-world study of the effects of global change on ecosystems, including the impacts of climatic change, elevated carbon dioxide and ozone levels, nitrogen saturation, acid rain, and invasive species. The Institute will be taught by internationally-recognized faculty and researchers from Michigan Technological University. Participants will visit the FACE research site (http://aspenface.mtu.edu/) in northern Wisconsin where the effects of elevated CO2 and ozone on forest productivity are clearly observable.
